Crisis Committees

Some of the most dynamic committees hosted by SOMA are the Crisis Committees. Here, delegates take on the roles of the key decision-makers in two opposing committees, which face off in a battle of strategy and wits. Throughout, SOMA’s Crisis Staff will introduce challenging new developments for them to work through. In the Ad-Hoc committee, delegates are not provided with topics or background guides beforehand. The Ad Hoc topic for SOMA L was “Monopoly.” This year, SOMA will have 2 crisis committees, which will be held in person.

1984

In this committee re-enactment of George Orwell's 1984, you'll serve Oceania's totalitarian state as officials from the four ministries that maintain Big Brother's absolute control. The Ministry of Truth rewrites history and manufactures propaganda. The Ministry of Love enforces loyalty through interrogation and re-education. The Ministry of Peace manages perpetual warfare. The Ministry of Plenty controls economic production and rationing. Navigate a world where Newspeak limits thought itself, where surveillance is absolute, and where the Party's greatest threat comes from within its own ranks.

Ad Hoc

For those ready for a challenge, in Ad Hoc, you will know nothing until you're in the room. Maybe you're managing a corporate scandal, maybe surviving first contact with aliens, maybe rewriting history at a crucial turning point. No briefing guide will save you—you must succeed through impromptu thinking, ruthless alliance-building, and adapting to cascading crises. Expect betrayals, plot twists, and scenarios requiring you to think on your feet.
