Each year, SOMA invites a leading figure in current affairs to give a keynote speech at our opening ceremony; our past speakers have included Dr. Peter Singer, Special Advisor to the Director General; Pericles Lewis, Dean of Yale College; and Assistant Director General of the World Health Organization, and David Morley, CEO of UNICEF Canada.
This year, SOMA 53 is pleased to welcome the Honourable Ms. Chrystia Freeland to open our conference. Ms. Freeland is a Canadian politician and journalist who served as Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister from 2019 to 2024 and Minister of Finance from 2020-2025. Currently, she is the incoming CEO of the Rhodes Trust in Oxford, United Kingdom, and serves as the Adviser of Economic Development of Ukraine. The Secretariat is beyond grateful to welcome her insights and presence to the 650+ delegates at SOMA 53.
