square Apply for SOMA

The deadline for applying for SOMA XXXVIII has now passed. Applications for SOMA XXXIX will be posted on the website in early fall.

There are three components to your SOMA application:

1. School Registration Form. This form should be completed by the Staff Advisor; it contains information on your school’s MUN program and lists the students applying to be delegates.

2. Delegate Application. Each student seeking to become a delegate must complete the Delegate Application individually. Each application is evaluated individually by Secretariat based on the criteria provided below in order to ensure that all delegates will be able to both contribute to and benefit from the conference as much as possible.

3. Delegate Fee. You must submit CDN$105 for each delegate who is applying with your application. Secretariat will return fees for any delegates who are not accepted; applications submitted without payment will not be reviewed. Secretariat kindly requests that schools submit one cheque for all delegate fees, as this allows us to process payment – and send reimbursements – much more quickly.

Selecting a Country

As part of the application process, delegates are allowed to request countries that they would like to represent at SOMA. We encourage delegates to be realistic in their requests, as this will increase the chances that their choices will be honoured.

Two resources may be used in selecting countries.

Committees List
This list describes the committees that will be running at SOMA this year. This list will be posted in early fall.

Committee Membership Matrix

The Committee Membership Matrix lists all of the countries represented at SOMA this year, the committees on which they sit, and the number of delegates required to represent each country.

Use the Membership Matrix to determine which countries your delegation would like to represent, based on the number of delegates attending and the committees which they would like to attend.

Please also note that the historical crisis is not included on the Membership Matrix. Delegates wishing to participate in the historical crisis should indicate so on their application.

Delegate Selection Criteria

Delegate applications are evaluated for three categories: research, experience, and style. Practically, means that delegates should aim to furnish relevant statistics and sources where applicable, show an active interest in Model UN and public speaking, and write in a concise and grammatically accurate manner.
