square Invitation

Dear Delegates and Staff Advisors,

On behalf of the Secretariat of the Southern Ontario Model United Nations Assembly (SOMA), we are pleased to invite your school to participate in our thirty-ninth assembly, to be held at the downtown campus of the University of Toronto from April 27th until April 29th, 2011. The conference will consist of Opening Ceremonies on the first evening, which will feature a keynote speaker and an introduction to the rules and procedure, followed by two days of productive debate, and a banquet and closing ceremonies on the final evening. This year's Secretariat has placed special emphasis on modifying the conference per the suggestions we received at the conclusion of last year's assembly: we invite you to refer to the enclosed sheet for further details on changes to be introduced this year.

Since its inception in 1972, SOMA has become one of the oldest, largest, and most prestigious high school model United Nations conferences in North America, attended annually by over six hundred students passionate about world affairs. As well as increasing students' awareness of world issues, SOMA promotes an atmosphere of diplomacy and cooperation, in which delegates learn the art of negotiation and compromise. The conference features multiple General Assemblies, regional committees, and smaller councils, covering with topics ranging from sustainable development to international trade, which provide ample opportunity for each and every delegate to participate.

Application will be made available online starting October 11th on our website, www.soma.on.ca. Both a school registration form, completed by the staff advisor, and a delegate application for each delegate nominated, must be sent to Secretariat along with a cheque for delegate fees no later the December 1, 2010. More details on the application process can be found on the attached sheet labeled, "Application Instructions." Secretariat's decisions as to committee assignments, along with further information such as guides to delegate preparation, will be sent in January 2011. We ask that forms be filled out online and sent electronically to the Secretariat, so as to conserve the amount of paper used.
